An analytical model for a biomass system

Abstract:
More than half of the world's population depends on biomass as a source of energy. The rapid population growth of rural areas has, however, placed severe strains on the biomass resource, which has led to deforestation and desertification of some areas. We present a linear, dynamic, deterministic model that captures the interaction between the supply and demand for biomass from both natural forests and man-made forests. Tanzania has been used as an example to derive parameters of interest, but we believe the model will be applicable to other developing countries.
