Abstract:
In many developing countries, the hygiene-related demand for hot water will increase with urbanization and rising standards of living. Energy policies should be aimed at satisfying such demand with water-heating technologies compatible with the resource endowments of the country. Brazil is taken as an example of a country in which the widespread residential use of electricity for heating water is creating peaking problems. A shift to showers with water heated by burning alcohol will serve to alleviate this problem. Proven technology is described and tested.
