A comprehensive analysis of natural gas reserve policies: Global comparison, quantitative analysis, and strategic insights

Lei Zhang

Energy, 2025, vol. 320, issue C

Abstract: In this paper, the natural gas reserve policies of major countries are discussed in depth. It makes up for the shortcomings of previous studies in originality, analytical accuracy and contextual comprehensiveness. Through the horizontal and vertical comparison of natural gas reserves in 11 major countries, the paper analyzes many aspects of natural gas reserves in these countries. In addition, DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis) was incorporated to provide quantitative evidence. The study also delves into the impact of geopolitical risks, energy transition policies, and decarbonization strategies on gas reserves, and examines the interaction between reserve trends and market behavior, technological advances, and global policy changes. The results of the study are intended to provide valuable guidance for countries to develop effective gas reserve strategies.
