Energy, 2025, vol. 323, issue C

Abstract: This paper presents the development of an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) for a 50 kWe power generation system based on industrial waste heat recovery. This study aims to provide the current research status of the ORC power generation system for low and medium temperature industrial waste heat, with a focus on the detailed design of the system and operation of the system. Eco-friendly refrigerant R1336mzz(Z) was selected as a working fluid. In this study, cycle design of the system was developed using an in-house code for the optimization of a pilot plant of a 50 kWe ORC power generation system for waste heat recovery. The pump inlet temperature, pressure ratio, and maximum cycle temperature were examined for the cycle sensitivity analysis. The optimized cycle efficiency of the R1336mzz(Z) 50 kWe ORC was 15.91 % with a pump inlet temperature of 45 °C, turbine inlet temperature of 195 °C, and turbine pressure ratio of 9.5. The turbine was designed and manufactured as a hermetic system with oilless airfoil bearing for ORC power generation system. Furthermore, the construction of the 50 kWe ORC power system pilot plant was accomplished. A test of pilot plant was conducted to verify the operation of the system.
