Abstract:
The packing structure of particles has a significant effect on the heat transfer performance of the granular bed heat exchanger. A method of applying vibration to random packed granular bed heat exchanger is proposed to improve its heat transfer performance. The discrete element method (DEM) is used to simulate the heat transfer process between the random packed granular bed and the heat exchange wall. The effect of vibration amplitude on the heat transfer characteristics of granular bed is analyzed. The results show that the applied vibration contributes to the increase of solid fraction, specific contact number with the heat exchange wall and coordination number of random packed granular bed. Correspondingly, the heat storage performance and heat transfer performance of the granular bed are improved. With the increase of vibration amplitude, the heat storage per unit volume and heat flux both show a trend to initially rise, subsequently decline, and ultimately stabilize, with the peak occurring at 0.25 times the particle size. The heat storage per unit volume and heat flux are 666.7 MJ/m3 and 437 W/m2, respectively, which increased by 7.5 % and 11.7 % compared with the conventional random packed granular bed.
