Cross-regional peak-shaving scheduling for the hybrid pumped storage-wind-photovoltaic complementary system

Abstract: The rapid increase of wind and photovoltaic (PV) power has resulted in significant power curtailment issues, challenging the safe and reliable operation of power systems. This paper aims to coordinate multi-energy complementary operation, energy storage, and cross-regional consumption to address variable renewable energy (VRE) consumption. We propose an innovative hybrid pumped storage-wind-PV complementary system. It is retrofitted from a conventional hydropower facility by adding an upper reservoir and equipping it with reversible units. Next, a multi-source joint cross-regional peak-shaving scheduling model is introduced, focusing on power generation prioritization, peak-shaving efficiency, and the mitigation of curtailment. A case study conducted in China yields the following insights: 1) When storage capacity is available in the lower reservoir, the priority for power generation into the grid is as follows: VRE power > pumped storage > conventional hydropower. Conversely, the priority shifts to conventional hydropower > VRE power > pumped storage; 2) The overall power generation of the system has increased by 8435 GWh, resulting in a decrease in curtailed electricity by 54.32 %. Furthermore, the system meets the peak-shaving requirements of various power grids, leading to a reduction in the peak-valley difference. 3) However, the system may lead to increased fluctuations in water levels within conventional reservoirs.
