A high technology-low energy demand for Western Europe

Abstract:
Changes in the structure and energy intensity of the Western European economy are projected in response to increases in real energy prices over the next fifty years using a systems analysis of energy demand by sector and geographic region. The evolution of energy demand is explored using the MEDEE demand model developed by Lapillone at IIASA. The results indicate Europeans can expect to double their economic output, substantially increase their mobility, and dramatically increase the available living space per capita while maintaining 1975 levels of European energy use.
