Abstract:
In tourism, scales are commonly developed using Classical Test Theory (CTT), while other fields have progressively adopted alternative psychometric approaches, including the Rasch measurement model, which promise to overcome some of the weaknesses inherent in CTT. This paper provides a comprehensive introduction to Rasch measurement, highlighting the main differences to CTT and outlining the data requirements of the Rasch model. It also presents an application of Rasch analysis using the General Ecological Behavior (GEB) scale as an illustration of a growing area in tourism research. The benefits of the Rasch model for measuring environmental behavior are outlined, and insights from Rasch analysis for scale adaptation specifically to tourism are presented. The GEB scale showed inconsistent use of response options, some item bias across groups of respondents, and response dependence between some items. Opportunities for improving the data fit to the Rasch model and refining the scale are provided.
