Abstract:
While researchers are interested in understanding how the polychronicity trait affects individuals’ and teams’ performance, it remains unknown whether team polychronicity elevation benefits or hurts team process. It is also important to identify the boundary conditions that shape the effects of team polychronicity elevation on team process and team performance. Drawing from the TIP theory, we build and test a model to shed light on how team polychronicity elevation and team time pressure jointly give rise to team process conflict, and reduces team performance. With a study of 98 work teams, we found that when team time pressure is higher, the effects of team polychronicity elevation on team process conflicts are stronger. Team process conflict mediates the interactive effects of team polychronicity elevation and team time pressure on team performance. Implications for current and future team polychronicity elevation research are also discussed.
