Radiation reaction in quantum mechanics

Michel de Haan

Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its Applications, 2025, vol. 669, issue C

Abstract: The radiation reaction is computed inside quantum mechanics by combining the Wigner quasiprobability distribution for the particle and a statistical description provided by R. Balescu and M. Poulain for the field in classical dynamics. The subdynamics approach enables to get a kinetic irreversible equation for the system where the virtual field is no longer present. The emitted field is determined and corresponds, at the order considered, to sharp lines of radiation due to transitions between levels. A finite kinetic equation determines the behavior of the particle: the usual divergences associated with the radiation reaction are not present in this irreversible approach. The time evolution of the energy associated with the particle is also computed.
