Effects of aggregate size, shape, orientation, and volume fraction on the interfacial layers of concrete

Abstract:
Concrete can be considered a three-dimensional two-phase composite with aggregate particles and cement matrix at the mesoscopic scale. The wall effect is often observed in concrete and leads to interfacial layers near the boundaries of concrete. The features of aggregates significantly impact the interfacial layers and then affect the macroscopic properties of concrete. Different kinds of non-spherical particles are employed as aggregate particles in this paper to explore the effects of aggregate features on the interfacial layers. Concrete structures are generated based on the constructions and contact detection algorithms of particles. Using the particle packing method and the section analysis method, three parameters for the solid phase (i.e., the volume fraction VV, the specific surface area SV, and the mean free spacing λ) can be obtained to characterize the change in the properties of the interfacial layer. Finally, the effects of the aggregate features, including aggregate size, shape, orientation, and volume fraction, on the interfacial layers of concretes are studied. These results are meaningful for the properties and design of the composites.
