Experimental study of thermal and hydraulic performance of multi - pass jet impingement solar air heater

Abstract: This present work deals with the experimental study of the effect of the jet diameter ratio, Dj/Dh and Reynolds number, ReDh on thermo-hydraulic performance of a double-pass inline-hole jet plate solar air heater (JPSAH) under cross-flow condition. In the present study, the ranges of geometrical and operating parameters such as, jet diameter ratio, Dj/Dh = 0.058, 0.077, 0.096, mass flow rate, m˙ = 0.10–0.14 kg/s, Reynolds number, ReDh = 9883–18469, and daily mean solar flux, IT = 702–1318 W/m2 are taken to get the experimental results in terms of Temperature rise parameter (TRP), collector efficiency, Nusselt number, Stanton number and efficiency index for the double-pass JPSAH. This work also compares the present results with simple double-pass solar air heater. It is found that the maximum percentage increments in Nusselt number, Stanton number and efficiency index are 101.5 %, 14.3 % and 113 % respectively at Re = 12011for Dj/Dh = 0.058 compared to simple double-pass solar air heater (SDPSAH). Based on the experimental data, correlations for the Stanton number, friction factor, and efficiency index have been developed.
