The role of magnetic maghemite (Fe2O3) nanoparticles for the improvement of 2nd generation biodiesel/diesel Blends: RSM based multi-objective optimization

Abstract: Nanoparticle additives have gained increasing attention for enhancing the performance and emission characteristics of biodiesel fuels. In this study, the addition of maghemite (Fe2O3) nanoparticles at 3 different concentrations (50, 100 and 150 ppm) to J10 fuel (jojoba biodiesel 10 % + diesel 90 %) was tested in a single-cylinder diesel engine. This study is the first to investigate the effect of this nanoparticle as an additive in jojoba biodiesel. With 100J10 (100 ppm Fe2O3 + jojoba biodiesel 10 % + diesel 90 %) fuel blend, average CO emission decreased by 49.84 % and average HC emission value decreased by 66.880 % compared to neat diesel. However, with the 100J10 blend, average CO2 emission increased by 26.33 % and NOx emission value increased by 24.04 % compared to neat diesel. Fe2O3 nanoparticles added to biodiesel positively affected the engine performance. Compared to J10 fuel, BSFC value of 100J10 fuel decreased by 4.02 %, while BTE value increased by 4.21 %. The optimum operating conditions were determined as 1.46 kW load and 59.09 ppm Fe2O3 nanoparticle added fuel. The values obtained under these operating conditions were 5.03 % CO2, 8.39 ppm HC, 445.55 ppm NOx, 376.86 g/kWh BSFC, 22.69 % BTE and 0.0343 % CO.
