Energy storage technology innovation, performance appraisal pressure of officials and energy security: An empirical study in the context of energy transition

Abstract:
Energy storage technology, a foundational pillar of modern energy systems, serves as a critical mechanism for enhancing energy security. Utilizing panel data from 30 Chinese provinces spanning 2012 to 2022, this study empirically investigates the complex impacts of energy storage technology innovation on energy security. The findings indicate that energy storage technology innovation significantly improves energy security, especially in the eastern and central regions as well as in specific types of provinces. The moderating effect analysis reveals that officials' economic growth pressure weakens the promoting effect of energy storage technology innovation on energy security, while officials' carbon peak pressure amplifies this influence. Additionally, the study uncovers a nonlinear relationship between energy storage technology innovation and energy security, exhibiting a "U" shaped characteristic of "shrinking-swinging-raising." In this nonlinear relationship, the moderating effects of official economic growth pressure and carbon peak pressure remain significant. These results have valuable implications for the realization of China's energy security and sustainable development goals.
