Brazilian Journal of Political Economy, 2024, vol. 44, issue 4, 657-678

Abstract: This article defends the hypothesis that Independence represented the initial andnecessary condition for the construction of a national development project that would beconsolidated after the Revolution of 1930. Despite its merits and mistakes, the developmentalpolitical economy may be considered the only economic policy experience adopted inBrazil whose industrial development objectives also included measures to expand citizenshipand income distribution.
