Brazilian Journal of Political Economy, 2025, vol. 45, issue 2, 361-381

Abstract: This article discusses the distributive role played by pension policy for gender equityin Brazil. The evaluation of differences on retirement age among men and women revealslow effectiveness, inadequate focus, high social cost and undesirable effects on sustainabilityand equity of Brazilian social pensions. We present and assess proposals to convergeretirement ages among men and women and to extend the maternity benefit period. Whenadopted jointly, these measures could improve pension policy design, leading to greater socialprotection and positive impacts on gender equity. JEL Classification: H55; J26; D63; J16.
