Narratives and economic policy: the construction of the fiscal agenda in the journalistic media in the period 2010-2015

Abstract:
The article assesses media coverage of the Brazilian fiscal policy from 2010 to2015 through thematic analysis of the newspapers Valor Econômico, Folha de São Paulo,and O Estado de São Paulo. A total of 1,706 articles were cataloged using the following predeterminedkeywords: fiscal policy, austerity, fiscal adjustment, excessive spending, “neweconomic matrix”, and fiscal problem. In the context of media coverage, these terms wereclassified as “Positive” (if based upon orthodox analysis) or “Negative” (other analysis). Thefindings reveal a dominance of the orthodox perspective, with over 60% of coverage acrossall filters. JEL Classification: B50; E60; Z13.
