Abstract:
Assessment is examined through the lens of relevance, belonging, and growth mindset to show how methods like exams, projects, and peer reviews can impact student engagement, community, and motivation. This chapter first provides a description of the current assessment landscape in economics education. It follows with a critique of traditional practices and explores innovative approaches, including the role of artificial intelligence in adaptive assessment. The chapter asks instructors to consider how different assessment methods can impact student motivation by impacting relevance, belonging, and growth mindset. It emphasizes the need for research to identify optimal practices that promote inclusivity and accurately measure learning. Backwards design is presented as a tool to align assessment methods with desired educational outcomes.
