Chapter 6 in Rethinking Economics Education, 2025, pp 80-103 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter critiques traditional lecture-dominated pedagogy, advocating for research-based practices informed by relevance, belonging, and growth mindset. The chapter makes clear that economics education research to date tells us the “what” – what pedagogies are employed in the economics classroom. But there is little research to identify the “why” – why pedagogies generate the outcomes they do. Relevance, belonging, and growth mindset is provided as a way for understanding the why. It reviews innovations like cooperative learning and flipped classrooms, discussing their potential for inclusivity and engagement. Using backwards design, the chapter illustrates how to structure pedagogic research to uncover effective teaching practices. It emphasizes the importance of addressing implicit bias and stereotype threats in the classroom to support diverse learners.
