Abstract:
When individuals or organisations are looking for Continuous Professional Development (CPD) opportunities in economics they often first consider courses delivered by university academics. Experience teaching economics in university does not however automatically ensure expertise delivering CPD. There is a particular challenge in terms of course design as learners are pressed for time and may lack the motivation associated with traditional degree students. In this chapter, we use our experience building and successfully delivering blended economics training for professional learners to develop a set of guidelines for such a provision. We comment on the transferable benefits from delivering such online courses for typical university settings, including adaptability and flexibility for diverse student cohorts and a focus on real-world issues to engage learners. Finally, we discuss why developing such courses might be useful for universities in an evolving higher education landscape with financial pressures and changes in how learners engage with institutions.
