GASTECH, a French born-again global firm

Chapter 3 in Cases on Born Globals, 2024, pp 24-39 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Born-again globals are firms that have joined the international entrepreneurship field, the traditional exporter and Born Global firms. Indeed, according to Bell, MacNaughton and Young (2001), born-again global firms are companies that first focus on their domestic market before internationalising quickly. This rapid internationalisation dynamic is usually driven by a ‘critical’ event that triggers the SME’s internationalisation. In this case, we present the story of GASTECH, which has followed the same pattern and can thus be considered a born-again global firm. First, we present its context, then the firm’s main figures and finally, the three main segments of its timeline. We finish this case by asking questions about the firm’s internationalisation and how it overcame some difficulties. This case discusses how managerial crises can trigger rebound effects and how specific capabilities make it possible to succeed abroad.
