Outcomes of counterproductive work behavior

Abstract: Counterproductive work behaviors (CWB) are associated with negative outcomes for targets of CWB, perpetrators who enact them, and individuals who observe or learn about CWB. There have been beneficial outcomes of CWB associated with learning, problem-solving, or efforts to make amends. Theoretical perspectives that have informed this research have considered affective reactions, moral agency, moral disengagement, resource loss or threats, social influence, and social exchanges, among other theories. Nevertheless, there remain opportunities to develop new theories that consider multiple perspectives and levels, longer time horizons, and the evolving contexts within which CWB occurs.
