Bullying, mobbing and emotional abuse at work

Charlotte Rayner

Chapter 7 in Handbook of Counterproductive Work Behavior, 2025, pp 104-122 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter examines the nature, definition and prevalence of workplace bullying, which is the experience of negative behaviors at work that can lead to recipients experiencing stress and severe psychological damage with concomitant physical effects. Bullying takes several forms some involving groups (mobbing) and pernicious undermining or ‘gaslighting’ behavior that constitutes emotional abuse. The chapter comes at a crucial time for the topic which started in the mid 1990’s. Contemporary thinking is presented while showing how some ineffective research and practice paths have been abandoned. Our knowledge base is now substantial, and our understanding of workplace bullying is impressive, however we remain ineffective in helping practitioners deal with the issue. The chapter can be read without prior knowledge, and it signposts deep-dive resources.
