Introduction: harnessing innovation for advancing a circular bioeconomy

Lars Molden, Dolores Modic, Einar Rasmussen, Siri Jakobsen and Wim Vanhaverbeke

Chapter 1 in Research Handbook of Innovation in the Circular Bioeconomy, 2025, pp 2-14 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The concept of a circular bioeconomy (CBE) addresses both what to achieve in terms of making resource use sustainable through circularity and how to achieve this through the production and use of biological resources, products, and processes. The transition towards a more CBE is challenging because it requires substantial changes in how products and materials are designed, produced, distributed, cascaded, consumed, and handled by all actors in the bioeconomy and across its sectorial boundaries. This calls for innovation across all actors and levels, including individuals, firms, industries, institutions, and ecosystems. Interest in the CBE is strong in scholarly debates and very high at the policy level. This chapter thus presents the current research frontier in the CBE space and structures the debate. A brief introduction to each chapter of the book is presented and discussed.
