Chapter 8 in Research Handbook on Health Education, Health Promotion and Diversity, 2025, pp 100-114 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter explores the intersection between basic ethical principles, respect for cultural diversity, community engagement, and the challenges faced with the use of technology. Researchers find themselves dealing with a complex ethical landscape in a world where the use of technology is expanding. Fundamental ethical principles, such as autonomy, beneficence, and justice, serve as foundations for research ethics, ensuring the well-being of study participants and the integrity of research methods. The use of potential frameworks and community engagement approaches to address ethical considerations is discussed. Recognizing and valuing cultural differences in research to foster inclusivity and avoid harm is essential. Cultural diversity plays a crucial role in the ethical framework. It is especially important to consider this when incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) into research, since biases and cultural insensitivity may be ingrained in algorithms inadvertently, potentially perpetuating inequality and harm. A clear understanding of ethics is essential in health education and health promotion research.
