Chapter 9 in Research Handbook on Health Education, Health Promotion and Diversity, 2025, pp 115-129 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
To address health issues in our community, health educators should apply proven strategies that work or evidence-based interventions. This chapter presents the types of evidence-based interventions (EBIs), how to use EBIs, and sources for EBIs. There are several types of EBIs, including packaged programs, strategies or practices, and policies, systems, or environmental changes (PSEs). Health educators should take into consideration their population characteristics, resources, and the context when selecting EBI approaches, in addition to the best evidence. Steps to take in an evidence-based approach for public health are community assessment, quantifying the issues and developing a statement about the issue, determining what is proven to work in the scientific literature, prioritizing a list of potential program or policy options, developing an action plan, and implementing and evaluating the delivery of the selected program or policy.
