Abstract: This chapter uses a sociohistorical and feminist framework to explore global perceptions of Muslim women who wear hijabs. The hijab, a modest head covering worn by some Muslim women, symbolizes religious freedom and the right to choose, though not all Muslim women choose to wear it. Contemporary controversies, politics, and policies highlight the complex interplay between personal choice, societal expectations, and perceptions. Utilizing collage as an arts-based approach, this chapter stimulates “visual rather than linguistic thinking” (Culshaw, 2019) to illustrate how photos can amplify Muslim women's voices and agency. The central question is: what can a photo collage method illuminate about the global impact of the hijab movement? This visual storytelling technique exposes the tensions, emotions, and oppressions experienced by Muslim women during the hijab movement of 2020–2023.
