Exploring notions of equity in school education within educational research publications: a systematic literature review

Barbara Gross and Lisa Bugno

Chapter 4 in Handbook of Social Justice in Education, 2026, pp 49-67 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The systematic literature review presented in this chapter examines different theoretical approaches applied in research on equity in school education. It also identifies the methodologies and methods used as well as new research findings that have emerged. The findings suggest that the theories of equity used in the included studies are highly differentiated, while empirical research on equity often converges on concrete single measures, such as professional development of teachers and educators to foster their beliefs, attitudes or actions within equity-focused work, the implementation of effective educational policies, or the schools’ role in dismantling structural barriers and creating inclusive environments. However, intersectional and multi-level approaches are largely missing, which limits the development of more comprehensive solutions. This chapter contributes to ongoing scholarly and policy discussions, offering insights that can inform future developments to promote equity in schools.
