Decolonising African education: critiquing strategies and reimagining social justice

Bothwell Manyonga

Chapter 7 in Handbook of Social Justice in Education, 2026, pp 99-114 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter explores the challenge of implementing practical decolonisation within educational systems, focusing on the complexities and intellectual injustices that impede genuine transformation. It critiques existing proposals and explores alternative frameworks that prioritise knowledge equity. Decolonisation demands a thorough evaluation of current suggestions and the exploration of new frameworks that centre on intellectual fairness. Adopting a conceptual approach, this chapter synthesises perspectives from University World News articles through content analysis, highlighting practical challenges. The research employs critical discourse analysis to scrutinise the discourse around decolonising African education. It identifies barriers to progress and proposes justice-centred alternatives for meaningful transformation. The chapter offers a nuanced understanding of these barriers and underscores the need for actionable practices over rhetoric. Ultimately, it provides a road map for practical and effective decolonisation strategies in African education, moving beyond theoretical discussions to deliver actionable insights.
