Student-centered theories related to active learning: flipped classroom with experiential and community-engaged learning

Malek El Diri

Chapter 2 in Flipping the Classroom with Experiential and Community-Engaged Learning in Business, 2025, pp 18-33 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter explores student-centered theories related to active learning, an approach that gives students more control as they share the ultimate decision-making in their learning alongside their teachers. Active learning can be implemented through different methods, such as flipped learning, which provides students with a more personalized learning experience; experiential learning, which allows theories to be implemented in a practical context; and community-based learning, which aims to create connections between classroom activities and the community. The chapter analyzes the alignment of such student-centered theories to Bloom's Taxonomy and provides insights into the interaction of experience and community in the flipped classroom learning model. While the value of implementing flipped learning in student education is questionable, community engagement and experience-based learning may contribute to the usefulness of flipped learning by fostering practical thinking skills and relationships with the outside world.
