Using psychology to lead in psychology

Abstract:
A significant body of scholarship exists about the psychology of effective leadership. Less is known, however, about the effectiveness of applying psychological principles and theories to leadership in a psychology department, where stakeholders are “in the know.” This chapter explores leadership education in that context, leveraging two key phenomena from the field of social psychology: social norms and influence. In particular, attending to social norms and influence can provide administrative leaders with a productive pathway to achieve their initiatives and goals, even in an environment of shared governance with faculty who have significant authority and autonomy.
