Global citizen responsibilization and environmental sustainability in the global marketplace

Abstract: We propose that global citizens are responsible agents of change in the environmental sustainability domain, not only as individual actors but also as catalysts for consumer movements. Taking a social identity perspective, we discuss global citizens’ social identity as bundled in their environmental consciousness, global connectedness, and engagement with the marketplace. In times when we are increasingly observing environmental crises, but also witnessing debate about whether and how to respond, we argue that global citizens are an important segment of consumers who can drive social change. This chapter draws attention to how global citizens, alongside individual responsibility, are poised to advocate for social movements and collective action in relation to environmentally sustainable behaviors (acquisition, consumption, and disposition), environmental sustainability education efforts, and producer brand/product life extension responsibility.
