Abstract:
Despite the ubiquitous presence of nature and nature-related content in consumers’ lives, we still have a limited understanding of how nature is portrayed and experienced in consumption and how it influences sustainable consumer behavior. Building on advances in environmental psychology, consumer research, and related disciplines, as well as drawing on realities of contemporary consumption, we present a framework that identifies nine dimensions of nature experiences in consumption contexts. For each dimension, we showcase focal social-psychological processes that underpin sustainable consumption and propose possible new avenues for further research. By adopting, adapting, and expanding this framework, we aim to inspire consumer researchers to build on the proposed conceptual foundations to broaden the scope of their investigations into the intricate mechanisms of sustainable consumer behavior.
