Abstract: This introduction outlines some of the challenges involved in conducting research on groups and teams. Issues identified relate primarily to the resources, both temporal and monetary, necessary to conduct research on the group level relative to the individual level of analysis, particularly in traditional laboratory settings. Specific barriers include the number of participants needed, which is itself magnified by attrition at the group level caused by participant losses at the individual level (e.g., if one individual drops out of a group, the entire group is typically lost for data purposes), and the increased cell sizes and replications recommended by new open science standards.
