Morale in organizations
Robert Monnot
Chapter 10 in Research Handbook on Group Decision Making, 2026, pp 182-194 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter summarizes the century-long progression and current stalled state of morale research in organizations and offers new theoretical perspectives. By recontextualizing the discussion of morale within the modern theoretical landscape of organizational behavior, this paper seeks to provide greater construct clarity, bolster definitional parity, and generate a roadmap for future empirical investigation. At the same time, this theoretical integration provides a bridge between old and new literatures that may serve to reduce redundancy, as well as inform current perspectives and future group research. To these ends, I provide an integrative model of morale in organizations by synthesizing findings and theories of past researchers with modern perspectives on morale-related constructs.
