There is no “AI” in teams: a multidisciplinary framework for AI to work in human teams

Abstract: AI designed to work in human teams, including for group decision making, should have the traits and functions necessary to work within a team. This chapter describes, at a high level, those requirements and issues that may enable the AI to perform within a human team. We define what it means to be in a team, the context and tasks that impact teamwork, and propose a multidisciplinary model of teamwork for AI-enabled teams. We describe a novel input-process-emergent state-output-input (IPEOI) model. In addition to the individual, team, and organizational levels, we split the individual between the human and the AI. Our model draws on a diverse literature to enable a comprehensive understanding of the requirements from all players in a teaming system. Current AI systems may not be advanced enough to implement these team-related features, but we propose some ways that future systems may support human teams.
