Navigating team trust in the digital age: virtual and human-AI teaming

Harjinder Gill, Scott Cassidy, Halah Abu-Omar and Simran Dhatt

Chapter 16 in Research Handbook on Group Decision Making, 2026, pp 316-340 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Trust provides the foundation for well-functioning teams and has been consistently linked with enhanced team performance and a range of positive outcomes across multiple meta-analyses. However, the emergence and enactment of trust within teams is highly context-dependent. In the digital age, this context increasingly involves the integration of a wide range of different workplace technologies, including telework models, virtual teams, robotics, and artificial intelligence. Although these technologies offer clear benefits, their influence on the development and maintenance of team trust is less well understood. This chapter explores the impact of two emerging technology-enabled team structures—virtual teaming and human-AI teaming—on team trust. Although there are important distinctions between each structure, both present challenges for scholars and practitioners in conceptualizing team trust and developing effective strategies to foster it.
