How groups can overcome barriers to contributions: a case for amplification

Kristin Bain

Chapter 8 in Research Handbook on Group Decision Making, 2026, pp 138-159 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Despite the benefits of groups for complex problems that exceed the capacity of individuals, groups frequently fail to leverage the full value of their members’ contributions. Drawing from research on voice, information sharing, and group dynamics, this chapter explores two persistent barriers to group effectiveness—members withholding relevant contributions and groups undervaluing the contributions that members share. Additionally, I review evidence that amplification—public endorsement of a group member's contribution with attribution to the original speaker—offers a promising strategy to overcome these barriers. Amplification can enhance perceptions of voice climate, foster cohesion, elevate contributor status, and increase the perceived value of ideas. By exploring both the risks of silence and the power of peer support, this chapter offers evidence-based insights into how groups can foster inclusive collaboration and more accurately recognize and utilize the contributions of their members.
