Emotional intelligence: theory, measurement, and research in organizations

David R. Caruso, John D. Mayer and Peter Salovey

Chapter 2 in Research Handbook on Emotional Intelligence at Work, 2026, pp 12-31 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The ability model of emotional intelligence (EI) defines and measures EI as a standard or broad intelligence comprised of four, inter-related abilities. In this model, emotions are seen as signals that potentially help individuals make better decisions, guide thinking, and aid decision-making. Just as any form of intelligence is best measured objectively, a set of assessments based on the ability model have been developed. This chapter examines the ability model and its measurement, what ability EI predicts, and provides suggestions for how ability EI can be employed in research on the workplace.
