Abstract: Depression is defined by the International Classification of Diseases 11th Revision (ICD-11) as a consistent presence of five symptoms such as low mood, diminished interest or pleasure in activities, or hopelessness about the future. Depression has complex neurological and physiological mechanisms that influence how depression affects an individual. This includes the roles of various brain regions, neurotransmitters, and stress. Depression can negatively affect decision-making, energy/motivation, emotional intelligence, stress management, absenteeism, and reductions in performance are all vital aspects to any workplace. However, within management positions, these deficits can have wider-reaching negative effects for businesses.
