Abstract: Emotions are complex psychological states encompassing personal experiences, psychological arousal and behavioural expressions. Distinctive from mood and affect in duration, intensity, and contextual focus, emotions are key components in social communication, cooperation and social bonding. The role of emotion is grounded in established theoretical models, including James-Lange, Cannon-Bard and cognitive appraisal theories. The biological underpinnings of emotions are discussed, focusing on key brain structures involved in emotion regulation and expression. The applied relevance of emotion is discussed in the context of everyday functioning and decision-making, emphasising the importance of emotional intelligence in leadership and organisational effectiveness.
