Abstract: Executive function (EF) – a family of top–down mental processes involved in goal-oriented behaviour – are critical to an individual's success in the modern era. They make it easier for us to mentally manipulate information, flexibly adapt to changing environments, and respond in an appropriate manner for the situation. Demystifying prefrontal cortex function, and the unity and diversity of EFs, is critical for helping us understand human functioning. Decomposing EFs into their basic components could help to associate them with specific workplace behaviours, which may ultimately allow for tailored training to be delivered and improve business success.
