Heart rate variability in the workplace

Irene Centenaro

Chapter 41 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Neuroscience and Management, 2026, pp 143-145 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Heart rate variability (HRV) has emerged as a key physiological metric for assessing workplace well-being in modern, flexible work environments. Advances in wearable technology allow continuous HRV monitoring, offering insights into stress, attention, and cognitive performance. HRV-based interventions benefit both employers and employees by supporting self-regulation, enhancing productivity, and promoting health. Despite challenges regarding device accuracy and ethics, HRV holds promise for future applications, including team dynamics and organisational cohesion.
