Abstract:
Neurofeedback is a specific type of biofeedback, using EEG to monitor brain activity and reward desired patterns via operant conditioning. By training shifts in regional activation, it aims to influence mood and cognition. Previous research demonstrated benefits for pain, ADHD, epilepsy, psychosis, bipolar symptoms, and performance domains like attention, working memory, and sleep. However, methodological weaknesses, mixed results versus controls, limited long-term data, and possible side effects raise caution and call for stronger standards. More robust, well-controlled longitudinal studies are needed to validate efficacy and best practices. Emerging application includes leadership development.
