Neuroscientific coaching
Margarita Nyfoudi
Chapter 59 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Neuroscience and Management, 2026, pp 212-214 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Coaching is a dialogic workplace intervention in which the coach, through systematic questioning and feedback, helps the coachee to achieve work-related goals. It has been linked to a plethora of beneficial outcomes, including employee well-being, goal attainment, and skill development. Studies employing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), electroencephalograms (EEGs), and neurophysiological indices have linked coaching with differential brain processes, including visualisation, motivation, and relationship building. The chapter explores these studies and develops a future research agenda on the neuroscientific examination of coaching, including the exploration of brain region activation using different coaching techniques and methods.
