Organizational neuroscience

Sebastiano Massaro

Chapter 62 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Neuroscience and Management, 2026, pp 221-223 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Organizational neuroscience (ON) is an emerging interdisciplinary field that integrates neuroscience with management and organisational research to elucidate the neural, physiological, and biological mechanisms underlying workplace behaviour and decision-making. Rooted in the Carnegie School tradition, ON extends the study of motivation, emotion, and social interaction, among other topics, through neuroscientific inquiry. Empirical research employing neuroimaging, genetics, and wearable technologies has already yielded valuable insights, primarily into leadership and entrepreneurship. While addressing ethical and methodological complexities, ON is thus gaining institutional legitimacy, paving the way for a biologically informed foundation to refine management theory and enhance organisational effectiveness.
