Behavioural experiments in management

Chapter 8 in Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Neuroscience and Management, 2026, pp 29-32 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Behavioural experiments in management are systematically investigating how people behave in controlled or semi-controlled settings with the goal of improving decision-making, strategies, and organisational processes. Taking insights from behavioural economics, psychology, and organisational research, they empirically test hypotheses and simulate real-world scenarios at the same time as allowing controlled variations. State-of-the-art technologies enable large-scale experiments and help transform behavioural experiments into a key tool for evidence-based management. The application areas vary from human resource management and consumer behaviour to organisational development and innovation. Through the promotion of data-driven decision-making, transparency, and a learning culture, behavioural experiments improve adaptability as well as reducing bias.
