Human-centric leadership: engaging staff for high performance
Richard Courtney
Chapter 16 in How to Scale Engagement and Impact in Universities, 2025, pp 176-183 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter draws insights from the author's experience as a Head of Department within a large Post-92 University to demonstrate the role that Human-Centric Leadership (HCL) plays in the creation of high-performance teams. The chapter uses KPIs from Staff Satisfaction surveys and NSS results to illustrate how a collective culture of responsible self-leadership can be easily fostered through engaged relations between academics and management. The chapter presents a selection of examples that typify the trials and tribulations of academic leadership, especially engaging staff with careers and employability, satisfaction metrics, and experience and outcomes data. Consequently, the chapter demonstrates the key role of data analytics, numeracy, and communication skills in the academic leadership of large departments.
