Great impact expectations? Or an unexpected journey from engagement to commercialisation in the Humanities

Chapter 21 in How to Scale Engagement and Impact in Universities, 2025, pp 234-244 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
As I am a researcher committed to impact, engagement has always been part of my academic modus operandi. I discuss here the need to consider the ‘unexpected’ in impact, through my route to research commercialisation in Humanities. Following a decade of critical research into the development NGO sector, I co-founded One World Together, a social enterprise transforming support for global development. I talk about academics who may serendipitously find themselves pulled towards commercialisation and also about the types of support and investment that can maximise the impact of such ventures while limiting the risk of burnout for academics trying to fit commercialisation alongside teaching, research and leadership responsibilities. Time, flexible finance, and training and support through technology transfer ecosystems within and beyond the university – and that continue beyond enterprise launch – are key.
