Introduction to Rethinking Media Economics
Alan B. Albarran
Chapter 1 in Rethinking Media Economics, 2025, pp 1-14 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter serves as an introduction to the book, starting with very broad themes and concepts to allow for deeper investigation in the chapters that will follow. The concept of rethinking is introduced, along with the term media economics. Media economics is one of many subfields of general economics. The chapter examines important events that illustrate how thinking about economics has changed since World War II. Six broad themes are discussed: changes in financial markets, changes in monetary policy, the rise of multinational organizations; the rise of emerging markets; changes in globalization, and the rise of the labor force. The themes illustrate that the global economic system is constantly evolving as times and conditions warrant in response to forces like politics, wars, technology, and trade. The discussion provides a foundation for understanding media economics and media economics research in subsequent chapters.
